CrossBack Arowana got injured
The Red Tail Golden Arowana has been attacking the Crossback even though there are other fishes in the tank..... which RTG never attack.... look like these 2 arowana are not comfortable together....
Have to remove the injured CrossBack to my 2 feet tank for recovery.

Cross Back Arowana
Bought my 2nd Asia Arowana.... a Cross Back Arowana from Rainbow.....
I know it is dangerous to comm two arowana in the same tank...
Just want to test my judgement whether it is true that the current RTG needs a companion to play with the 4 big Koi..... Just my guts feeling... hope for the best... seriously hope they coexist well... of course some increase in tank bioload.....

Initially i thought the several Datnoids showing their nice bars due to LED lighting... i could be wrong.
This is T5 pink/blue lighting... and they also shows neatly bars....
It seems it is really hard to determine the actual reason why they are not showing neat bars and why they shows.... still a mystery for me....

Stable Datnoid reporting
It is quite rare to see all the Datnoids stable showing their bars... with the whitelight switch on.... Normally if i switch on my T5 white light or even T5 pink/blue lights, only the 4-bar Datnoid will be stable.. and the rest mostly will not. The reason could be that i am using the whitelight LED...

Do you notice 2 big jokers inside the caging ?
No no... i did not put them inside... there is a small opening, maybe around 2x3 inches wide that connects cage tower 1 to cage tower 2..... and somehow these 2 jokers can squeeze through it....
Firstly was the bigger one went inside... and today one more smaller one also join in....

Dead dragonfly in sump tank
Dead dragonfly in sump tank
Today while checking out the lighting and the fire shrimp in the sump tank, i noticed a dead dragonfly floating on the sump last compartment.
Had to remove it as it may pollute the filtered water back to the main tank.
Wonder how did a dragonfly gets inside as the sump is covered with cabinet and back has mash net....

DIY 5feet 25W 5050LED
This is a do it yourself 5050 brightlight LED and is definitely not as bright as T5, but at 25W for 5 feet long LED... i guess it is doable.
This is not for replacing my T5, at least not now. I just want to have an alternate lighting for me to play with.
Oh... i just create a new theme for this tank... Is it now called the Middle Earth.... all the giants outside attacking the 2 towers ! hahaha

Water changed for 6ft comm tank
Earlier today did a water changed for the 6ft tank.
Noticed the arowana and the 4-bar datnoid dances around the water splashing area where i top up water... Guess they really miss a good bath !
Should change water more often instead of monthly but too much work and time for me as i got quite a number of tanks.

Cichlid Tank noisy sound - Part 2
Cichlid Tank noisy sound - Part 2
Took a day off today for some household things and at the same time check out the noise from the Cichlid tank pump.
The whole process took me less than half an hour.. So lucky, it is just a small issue i guess.
The water inside the IOS pump compartment was quite clear and one snow cichlid inside... again?
Also, adjust the seachem matrix a little, could be blocking the water flow.... and everything was back to normal. Water level in pump compartment back to normal level at around 60-70% of tank height when i switch on the pump. Had to use ladder though to check the compartment because it is quite high.
Anyway, problem solved for now and also at the same, took out the purigen(very dirty) and bleach it. Put another READY purigen inside... The previous purigen has been inside since commission of the tank and around 6 months, so should need a good clean up, thanks for the pump noise else i would have forgotten that a pack of purigen was inside.

Cichlid tank pump giving sound
Cichlid tank pump giving sound
After the overhaul cleaning done recently, the pump has become noisy and i think the water level is quite low in the pump area... near to spend time to clean away, could be something clog inside.
Also, saw one cichlid dead body.... i should have been more careful in the cleaning... which i think i should have draw out the IOS dirty water instead of leaving it inside.
Now i realised IOS is just like a oversize canister, bigger space but cleaning is as tough.
I clean the sump tank before one compartment at a time, and it is easier, just suck the water and the residue inside, no cleaning of the rest.
03-APRIL-2013:
One peacock cichlid lay dead on the sand base.... quite big one... sad.... i suspect the overhaul maintenance is too rough... next time have to draw out the IOS water as well when i do another overhaul cleaning.

Stingray tank overhaul maintenance
Stingray tank overhaul maintenance
Today is a tiring day.
Earlier, i cleaned the Cichlid tank because the water pump was not drawing enough water due to mechanical filtration clogging up.
At night, the same problem occurs for the stingray tank.... guess must be the colour spronge causing most of the problem.
However, when i took all the jap mat and black spronge for cleaning. The worst are the jap mat. They are all almost full of poo or waste...
It took me like 2 hours to clean the jap mat and black spronge and putting them back... Damned tiring...
According to the photos taken dated around September 2012, the stingray tank started running first around September 2012, and the Cichlid tank could be around October or November 2012.
It is quite weird consider that ray bioload is quite high, yet the Cichlid tank is the one that needs maintenance earlier than the ray tank consider that the ray tank starts commission first.
So, its like ray tank started running on Sep'12 and maintenace done on 31 March 2013.
And Cichlids tank started running on November'12 (based on my uploaded youtube) and maintenance done on 31 March 2013.
So it means Cichlid tank needs overhaul maintenance every 5 months and Ray tank needs overhaul maintenance every 7 months. I guess that is the trade off for doing monthly water changed routine.
Ok, time for bed... it is a long day.

Cichlids Tank Overhaul Maintenance
Cichlids Tank Overhaul Maintenance
The Cichlids tank so far has been my most least maintenance tank of all.
It has no filter wool since early Jan'13.
The mechanical filtration are only one piece of black spronge, few Jap mat and those colourful small spronge.
Today, the water pump seems to give some noise so i went to check it out, and then i realised the IOS compartment which has plants on top is almost overflowing.
So, i took out the plants, mainly the hortwort and 2 plants tied to driftwood.
Also, discover there are 2 plants dead inside.... not sure what i put in few months back but they had tured brown/black.... no wonder my PH is dropping even though i put in the PH buffer... this could be the cause.
After removed the 2 dead plants, i also cleaned the black spronge and the jap mat.
Also realised the colourful spronge is clogged with poo, no wonder the water flow is slow... so i removed all the colourful spronge.
After the cleaning, i put the jap mat to the bottom and more black spronge on top... this will make my next cleaning of the black spronge easier when i do my maintenance 3 months from now... or when the water flow is slow.
The PH also jump from 7.9 to 8.4 after the cleaning.... that is good sign.
Water changed was also performed today, since it is only few days away from the monthly water changed routine.
To me, the tank still look nice and clean after doing all the above.

Did some clearing of the dead frogbit and remove most of the hortwort. These hortwort came with the shrimp i bought and it was initially a small piece but now it has grown to many times of its original size. A good addition to my sump... Now i have unlimited supply of hortwort.... heehee...
Was trying to remove the fine hair like fur or plants.. not sure what they are but they sure stick very well to any plants.. especially the frogbit. Removing them proof to be a tough job without removing all the frogbit so i leave them alone.

Female ray injured
I noticed my female ray starts to have small spot under the disc few days back and yesterday the spot gets bigger and looks like bones expose also.
I got 2 other male rays and they look ok.
I wonder is it due to the pleco which seems to disturb the female ray quite a lot or the water issue or female ray infected with disease.
That evening, i took out the 2 pleco and changed 50% water.
Apply API furan-2 medicine and off the water pump, only left the air pump running. Next morning i switch on the water pump as the water is cloudy and i am worry about ammonia build up.
Will monitor the ray recovery daily.

Note: Best watched with HD, it will be clearer.
Feast for the predators with more than 200 feeders.
I throw in around 100 feeders last week ... cannot remember when.
Till early today it left around 30 feeders and i added 200 feeders again today.
Lets see how much these feeders can last without my manual feed... oh.. i know my bio filtration should be able to take these extra loads... Anway, due to change water next week.
Sorry for the lighting.. as i want to capture the Datnoids moving around.. so i did not switch on the T5 lights, only LEDs.

Planted Tank - Day 40
This tank is badly maintain.
I want to change water and trim the plants but not sure where to start now... it is kind of messy.... Should i just let it go wild.....?
It seems the 4 remaining adult guppies are doing well and some juveniles also.
Tank glass starts to have more algae even with so many snails.
No feeding for the guppies for at least a week also.
Pardon the background sound if you can hear them.. i think my sony cam is too sensitive in sound recording... i believe those noise comes from my ceiling fan and tank fan.. which is actually not so loud for human to hear but recording seems to enhance the sound....kind of noisy i think.

2ft feeder tank getting better
2ft feeder tank getting better
I have not change water for past 2 days as the seachem ammonia indicator showing yellow..which is safe for now.
Still have 1-2 feeder dying everyday, maybe they got too much ammonia exposure for past few days.
Since i have not added K1 and K1 also needs time to cultivate BB, it seems the Seachem Prime and the Seachem Matrix (around 2 litre/kg) is working for now.
Yesterday can see some bubbles on the surface, and today all are clear, even the water is clear and no more strong smells of ammonia.
Although all are well for now for my fishes or feeders but i myself is not feeling well... must be the weather... need some rest.

2ft feeder tank bio overload
2ft feeder tank bio overload
For past 2-3 days, i have been changing water because the seachem ammonia indicator is showing alert.
I guess it is because i have put in more than 100 feeders this time.
Wanted to try out K1 but no stock and got the Seachem Matrix instead. Pour in 2kg with net and some Prime as temporary measure.
Seachem Matrix may take sometimes to cultivate BB so hopefully adding Prime everyday can control the ammonia level until i do the weekly water changed.
Will also add K1 when i got my hands on it... This is a feeder tank... will be overloaded most of the time, so have to overdo the filtration, no choice... at least for now.

Using cheap material to stick the water proofed 5050LED which is cut to 4 feet length.
With the power adapter and the 4ft LED, measured power consumption is around 20W.
Not very power saving but at least it is bright enough to replace my 2ft T5 used previously.

Thirdly, the blood parrots can sleep inside.... hahaha....

DIY 1.2W LED for feeder/Bichir tank
DIY 1.2W LED for feeder/Bichir tank
Using all spare material, i was able to DIY a lighting for the 2 feet tank.
The original lighting inside caught water and got spoilt long time back.
Originally housing only feeders so lighting was not important.
Only recently got some small Bichir so decided to install a lighting that is cheap and usable.
So, i just use my spare Ikea warmlight LED (one bar of 0.6W and adapter 0.6W total 1.2W power consumption) and spare oyama paper, and of course some silicon to glue the LED to the glass.
Ikea LED is very durable and if i only switch on 5-10 minutes a day on average, it can last a very very long time before i need to tear it down and redo.
Anyway, to do it again only takes less than half an hour with ease.
Day Time
Using all spare material, i was able to DIY a lighting for the 2 feet tank.
The original lighting inside caught water and got spoilt long time back.

Planted Tank - Day 8
Day 8
Using Eden mini canister... (didn't expect myself to use canister again... the thought of carrying heavy weight container into the toilet.... lucky this is very small... no need big muscle...)
Just hope i secure the joint part correctly and no more water leakage....
I also added frogbit plants to combat the nitrate in the water, so hopefully can introduce more shrimp again.

Red shrimp dying
Can see a few red shrimp collapsing.. as in like dying.
They still jump around though.
I know the tank cycling is not complete, so i can only think of topping up more of my other fish tank water(actually is the sump tank water) to here, bringing the ratio between fish tank water and tapwater higher.
Now the tank is around 50% full of water.
The lights are also out now, so hopefully tomorrow i will have some survivors.

More plants to planted tank
Added more plants to the planned planted tank.
I think i have overdo it this time.
As mentioned by Diana, every new tank setup is different, and even same type of plants will find its new life.
So, it is better to try different plants and see how the plants work out.
I am assuming some plants will dominate and some will eventually disappear.
Hope with heavy planting, i do not have to wait too long to flood the tank ! ^_^
Edit: Some plants seems to be dying off very fast... I think i will have to flood the tank so that all plants are submerge.
Flood the tank to few inches.
